SAN ARDO, Monterey County — October 28, 2026. California regulators recorded a significant environmental decision this summer involving proposed oil-field work about five miles south of San Ardo. The California Geologic Energy Management Division, known as CalGEM, approved the environmental review for Aera Energy LLC’s San Ardo 2024 Wells Project on July 16, 2026, according to a Notice of Determination posted July 20.
What exactly is proposed?
The applicant seeks permission for six new cyclic steam-injection wells and two new steamflood injection wells within the existing San Ardo oil field, as well as related flowlines, pumping equipment and potential grading on existing well pads. The project area is approximately 2.9 acres of privately owned oil-field land near Highway 101, rather than a new drilling location in San Ardo’s residential streets.
Why are injection wells used?
Steam-based enhanced-oil-recovery systems introduce heat into oil-bearing formations to assist production. The filing concerns additional or modified industrial operations in an established field; it is not a new consumer drinking-water well project. Details about operating limits, well construction and field inspections must be obtained from CalGEM’s permit and inspection records.
What did the environmental process decide?
The State Clearinghouse record shows the project underwent recirculated Initial Study/Mitigated Negative Declaration review, including a June 3–July 2, 2026 comment window. The July filing reports that CalGEM found the project would not have a significant environmental impact after required mitigation, and that a mitigation monitoring program was adopted. That is the agency’s administrative determination, not an independently verified claim that all environmental risks have been eliminated.
Are the wells operating already?
The state environmental filing does not prove that eight wells were drilled or put into operation. An environmental approval, individual drilling permits, completed construction, inspection and operational status are separate milestones. The project is also distinct from California58’s earlier report on a San Ardo sidewalk construction contract.
What should nearby residents watch?
People interested in industrial activities near San Ardo may monitor permitting, oil-field traffic, air-quality oversight, water-management measures and agency inspection records. The filing provides the public with a specific project identifier so that later updates can be attached to this original article rather than repeatedly reposting the same decision.
